UPDATE: March, 2022
The actions taken by Russia against the sovereign nation of the Ukraine are reprehensible, but it's not like the writing wasn't on the wall...
__
These past 2014 Olympics in Sochi, despite being a symbol of international unity and peaceful cooperation between nations, had a strong odor of oppression and corruption. To start with, these were the most expensive games ever, by a ridiculous degree, and the list of contractors reads similarly to President Putin's birthday party invitation list. So that's a good start.
The systematic repression of the Russian LGBT community is reprehensible and should be more than enough to keep the games from ever landing in a place with that mentality.
While I love to see my nations flag waving in the background of a medal ceremony, these Olympic games feel tainted. Fingers crossed for South Korea. There's nothing at all to be concerned about in Korea is there?
In any case, as always, I hope you enjoy this piece, politics and all.
